Miss China Universe 2009 – Jing Yao Wang

19 year old, Jing Yao Wang, was crowned Miss China 2009 yesterday and will compete for Miss Universe in Bahama on August 2009. The runner-ups were Yu Jun Liu (1st Runner-up) and Mei Qi Li (2nd runner up). Ms. Wang will try to become China’s first ever Miss Universe.

2009 Miss Asia Pageant was held at the Headquarter of ATV last night. 21 year old dark horse Hui Ying took the crown. First runner up went to Wong Hei Yiu, who had so much negative press before hand, but it didn't influence the judges. Second runner up was Hui Kai Wai. Hot favorite Lau Yee sum only scooped the "Perfect Body Award". She was upset and expressed her disappointment. Wong Jin Jin got the "Miss Photogenic" award and the youngest contestant 17 years old Sing On won the "Crystal Clear Skin" Award.

Miss Asia 2009 dance teacher Hui Ying is 5 ft 8, she won the Miss Asia award in the mainland earlier. During the contest, she demonstrated Waltz which showed her as a talented dancer and probably won her the award. She also won "Outstanding Dance Beauty" and "Sleeping Beauty" award. Hui Ying appeared confident throughout her performances. Apart from her 2 million HKD prize money, her crown is worth 1.78 million HKD too. She told reporter she considered herself as a black horse "I think I performed OK in the contest. I am most confident in my dance performance. I believe I won because I have the positive state of mind throughout the competition."

First runner up Wong Hei had a negative press about her plastic surgery all over the newspaper before the contest. It was noted that her body figure changes all the time. When it was announced she was the first runner up as Miss Asia, she was stunned. 26 years old Wong Hei looks like "Michele Reis". She didn't show her excitement after she won. She expressed that she wanted to cry, she felt very satisfied and thanked everybody for supporting her. Asked how did she lose to Hui Ying, she replied "I haven't thought about that, I will tell you later."

Second runner up Hui Ka Wai doesn't have a prominent appearance and she was almost ignored by the press. It was a break through for her to have won the third prize as an under dog. 21 year old Hui Ka Wai was a university student and she won the second prize in Miss Asia Division and Miss Photogenic Award in Taiwan too. In this contest, she was also voted by the contestants to win the "CFLs beauty prize". After winning tha award, she kept blowing kisses to the judges.

Hot favorite Lau Yee Sum was in tears after losing the contest. She had to go back stage to put her make up back on. When she was interviewed by the reporter, she cried again and her make up was ruined yet again. She told reporters "I am very disappointed, I feel disappointed and very hurt. I thought I would be in the final three." Lau Yee Sum stressed that she did admit defeat and the result is also fair. She lost because she had not done enough preparation before the competition. She may consider to enter for the next contest again.

Xu Ying wins Miss Asia crown

Dance instructor Xu Ying, 21, was crowned the queen of this year's Miss Asia Pageant 2009 in Hong Kong on Sunday.

She walked away with the crown and other prizes worth over HK$2 million (RM889,300).

Xu, from Anhui, China, also won herself a television artiste contract with ATV (Asia Television Limited).

Wang His Yao, a 26-year-old purchasing manager emerged first runner-up while Taiwan undergraduate Hsu Chia Huei, 21, was second runner-up.

The annual competition organised by ATV, is open to women from all Asian countries. There are no age limits for contestants

In 1995, the contest rocked the beauty pageant industry for when the then 48-year-old Gong Xuehua was picked among the finalists.

This year’s competition was also mired in controversy with the programme drawing criticism over complaints that the organiser had resorted to "promoting flesh" to boost ratings.

It was aired-live in Hong Kong, competing with rival television station, TVB, which broadcast the Super Trio Supreme Battles Against Beautiful Cooking - a special programme based on two popular game shows.

In a move to win the ratings war, the station made the 12 finalists wear ‘see-through angel costumes’ and other sexy dresses at the event.

On its official website, ATV has announced that more than 850,000 audiences had watched the event, two-times more compared to last year.

The winners of the other awards of the pageant were:

Asia Television's reformist chief executive Ricky Wong Wai-kay was edged out of the station's leadership in a day of high drama just 12 days after taking up the highly publicized post.

But in a dramatic turn of events, Wong's spokeswoman last night issued a written statement through his office at Citi Telecom that he does not plan to resign, and has not been not notified by ATV of any such development.

The statement added that "the resignation does not exist."

ATV executive chairman Linus Cheung Wing-lam earlier broke the news that Wong had resigned as he announced an independent investigation into discrepancies in the results of the 2008 Miss Asia Pageant.

Cheung cited irreconcilable difference between them on management style for Wong's departure.

"I have great respect and admiration for Wong's integrity and talent," Cheung said. "In fact, Wong was recommended by me ... to join ATV.

"Most unfortunately, an irreconcilable difference in management style developed."

Wong's vow to transform ATV has sparked a flurry of controversies inside the station. At internal meetings, he told staff about his plan to drop the "TVB way of doing business" while gearing up for infotainment.

The news section also came under pressure to be slashed by more than half after Lunar New Year.

Meanwhile, Cheung revealed there were discrepancies in the final vote tallies of the beauty pageant and that an independent committee has been set up to investigate the scandal.

Bowing low, Cheung said: "I am deeply sorry."

Hong Kong's Eunis Yao, 23, was declared winner on December 7, followed by Belinda Yan of Toronto and Taiwan's Lene Lai.

A source disclosed that those who voted by internet or SMS who, for the first time, had the power to decide the winners as opposed to the traditional panel of judges - had voted differently to the final results.

The voters were mainland dominated, and the emergence of a Hong Kong winner raised eyebrows, the source said.

That incident could have been the trigger for yesterday's dramatic developments, the source said.

Without going into detail, Cheung said Wong had informed him of the discrepancies.

Wong had earlier requested a report from relevant staff and this was submitted five days after the pageant was aired.

Wong had discovered voters' tallies were different than the results announced on television. Based on "principles of sincerity, equity and justice," Cheung said the company decided to set up an independent committee to investigate the matter.

The investigation will take about two months, and will be conducted by KS Kwong, former secretary for information technology and broadcasting, Professor Andrew CF Chan, a committee member of the Electoral Affairs Commission, and Johnson Cha, a director of ATV.

But president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, who was in charge of overseeing voting results, was in no way responsible for the incident, Cheung stressed.

Cheung said it would have been unacceptable "if we waited two months before disclosing [the scandal] to the public."

"Wong's resignation is not in any way connected to the Miss Asia incident," he added.

Sporting prowess was pushed to the limits yesterday when the Miss World contestants competed in the first Miss World Continental Sports Event in Sheraton Sanya Resort, “the home of Miss World 2005”.

Everyone in each team tried their best in representing their continents, be it through joining the sports event as a player or as a cheering squad member. In the end, three teams bested all the others. The first place went to the Asia Pacific Team, second was the Caribbean Team and third was the Southern Europe Team.
